Santorini: A Vacation from the Travelling

I’ve found the cheapest place I could and apart from the harbour pick-up it really is the dirtiest and most disgusting place I’ve ever stayed at.

I arrived by boat from Pireaus, Athens. I’d had to spend the big bucks on a business class ticket since everything else was sold out. While extremely pissed that my guide book had suggested to buy last minute, I did get a surprisingly pleasant trip across the Aegean.

At the harbour in Santorini I was fortunate to be picked up by the hostel. I’ve found the cheapest place I could and apart from the harbour pick-up it really is the dirtiest and most disgusting place I’ve ever stayed at. I can’t figure out if it is the bins at the bathroom where you have to throw in your used toilet paper and which are only emptied once a day or the fungi covered shower curtains which seem as if they can stand on their own which wins the price for most disgusting surprise. In fact, I think the winner is the mouldy bed sheets in the damp underground room. I will never compromise because of price ever again – that is for sure.

The grime of the hostel however means that you stay away as often as possible. I’m here a week and I’ve seen most of the island, enjoying that I don’t have to travel to a new destination for awhile.

I’ve seen a not so fantastic sunset in Oia, shopped in Fira and walked around the volcanic centre island. I’ve sunbathed, relaxed and ridden a donkey to the great amusement of fellow tourists.

And while at the hotel I’ve spent the evenings out front alongside the other backpackers with lots of drinking games before venturing off to a cocktail bar or two down the water front.

A perfect recipe for a summer holiday.

I’ve added a small gallery of some of my shots from this absolutely stunning island.
