Gallery: Nordhavn

Sometimes the next adventure is just around the corner. With the building of the new neighbourhood Nordhavn in Copenhagen this is literally the case. Only a short bike ride from where I live, an entire new part of Copenhagen is rising.

The new Nordhavn

Nordhavn, meaning North harbour, is the main industrial harbour of Copenhagen. It was established in the late 18th century when the area in Øresund north of Copenhagen was filled out.

As part of the construction of the Copenhagen Metro, much of the earth is filled into what will be a 100 hectare extension of Nordhavn. A decades long plan will re-develop the area, starting with the Aarhus street area (Århusgadekvarteret) allowing for new real estate development and the re-invention of old silos into new penthouse apartments and the renovation of old historical buildings.

Further out a new Cruise Ship Terminal has been established and the old massive container terminal will be moved, while Copenhagen is still discussing whether or not to allow for various projects on the area.

On a wonderful and warm May day we took our bikes on a turn around the fascinating area with a mix of new and old, architecture and culture, innovation and creativity.
